Could Darth Sidious Conquer an Era of Sith Lords?

Emperor Palpatine – the architect behind the galaxy’s most sinister machinations – transported to the chaotic times of the Old Republic. How did this become such a fascinating thought experiment for Star Wars fans? A recent video from Stupendous Wave examines the would-be struggle of the galaxy’s most notorious Sith Lord in an era brimming with his kind: the Old Republic, a time when Sith Lords were as numerous as leaves on a Kashyyyk tree.

The Old Republic was an era defined by constant Sith infighting, interspersed with heavy doses of Jedi policing. Perhaps the greatest challenge to Palpatine wouldn’t be the Jedi but rather the sheer number of powerful Sith craving domination. This isn’t an environment where one Sith Lord can hitch a ride on the coattails of the Rule of Two. If anything, Palpatine would need to contend with rivals in a landscape that is less about shadowy manipulation and more about outright displays of strength and power.

Palpatine, or Darth Sidious, was a long-game schemer who maneuvered his way to Emperor with sheer cunning and mastery of the Force. Yet the Old Republic gloried in Sith like Darth Revan and Darth Malak who were battle-hardened, unpredictable, and bold. While Sidious was orchestrating the downfall of both the Jedi and the Galactic Senate from the shadows, those earlier Sith were engaged in direct conquests and brutal warfare.

I’m skeptical of Sidious’ odds in a time where diplomacy was settled with a lightsaber more often than not. His insidious nature thrives on environments where patience is rewarded – but patience could easily turn into a liability against egotistical warriors unwilling to be pawns in a long-winded plan. Would he even have reached a level of influence in an era where ruthlessly climbing over the corpses of your brethren was the norm?

What excites me is seeing how Sidious could adapt, if at all. The question isn’t just whether he could thrive in the Old Republic, but how he’d revolutionize his tactics to survive. Would he form alliances with unlikely Sith compatriots against a common enemy, or engineer a Sith civil war that lets him sidestep right into power? Either scenario offers tantalizing possibilities, but they demand him to be far more than a political puppeteer. Knights and Dark Lords weren’t liabilities to squabble over – they were daily realities, each capable of undermining his plans.

As the Stupendous Wave video breaks down, the most revealing test would be whether Sidious could find a different path to power. How does a master of stealth operate in a world that demands overt strength – a world without the equivalent of a Senate to infiltrate and manipulate? It’s not just the Sith that should worry him, but also the galaxy’s repercussions when raw power meets guileful intellect. Would his intelligence finally meet an adversary it couldn’t conquer through subterfuge alone?
